Role Description:

Use your skills to support disadvantaged young people to reach their potential!

Action Tutoring is an education charity working in partnership with schools, to support disadvantaged pupils to achieve.  We are looking for volunteers to work with pupils as their tutors for an hour a week, across seven cities in England, increasing their subject knowledge and confidence to help them to reach their potential.

Volunteering with us is an easy and rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of young people living in your community and use and develop your existing skills to support those pupils who need your help the most.

Our mission is closely aligned to Teach First’s – we are tackling education inequality by supporting pupils facing socio-economic disadvantage to reach a meaningful level of academic attainment.  We do this by providing targeted English and maths tuition, much needed extra support that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to or be able to afford.

Help us to support even more young people by volunteering for just one hour a week at one of our primary or secondary schools - we have a range of times and locations available (at schools across Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Sheffield and Sussex).

Last year, Action Tutoring pupils were able to match the national pass rate, after the equivalent of two terms of weekly tutoring, at GCSE level despite the extra hurdles they faced.  Nationally only 44% of disadvantaged pupils are able to meet this benchmark.  In the same year 72% of primary pupils supported by Action Tutoring achieved national standards in their SATs.  Just 10% were working at this level at the start of their programme.

In 2014, an independent evaluator, NIESR, analysed the impact of Action Tutoring on the young people supported. It found a positive association between the number of Action Tutoring sessions attended and the estimated impact; suggesting that pupils who attended at least seven sessions could make half a grade extra progress compared to their peers.  This research was verified as achieving level 3 on Nesta’s Standards of Evidence.

The Sutton Trust estimates that an intensive tuition programme can help a pupil to make five months of additional progress.  Due to these benefits tutoring has become a booming industry, with nearly 1 in 2 pupils in London having received support from a private tutor at some point.  Yet for those who can’t afford tuition, the boom in the industry is only exacerbating the attainment gap.  We believe education should be a level playing field and that all pupils should have access to these benefits, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Volunteering with us is a great way for you to meet like-minded people, possibly some other TeachFirst applicants or graduates, and do a bit of networking yourselves, as we recruit volunteers from all backgrounds and of all ages, from 18 to 80, to work with us.  Our pupils love getting to know you and your experiences give them a real insight into the wider world.

“My experience at Action Tutoring has been truly inspiring. Each session presented a new challenge, but with that came an opportunity to watch my pupils develop both their subject knowledge and overall confidence.  It was great to meet other volunteers from different walks of life who I wouldn’t necessarily have met otherwise. I look forward to working with Action Tutoring again in the future!” Ellen, Sussex tutor

As a tutor you will attend a specially designed training session to tell you everything you need to know about tutoring.  You will also be using structured resources, developed by curriculum specialists, to deliver your tutoring – so no in-depth lesson planning required!

Once trained you’ll be able to select a programme in a school and time slot that fits with your schedule.  You’ll then be paired with a couple of pupils and be responsible for tutoring them once a week, for a term (8 to 10 weeks).  There will be a member of the Action Tutoring team on hand every week to support you throughout.
